Toshiba DVD player troubleshooting



After the counters of electronics stores were flooded with DVD players, these excellent apparatuses also appeared on a table of repairs. How practice shows, there are similar malfunctions of DVD players in a basic mass. All malfunctions of the type of “No disk” or “Error”, random hangs-up during reproduction, etc. are specified below in our troubleshooting table with faults` codes for Toshiba DVD players.

No powerCheck if the AC cord is properly connected.
Unplug the AC cord once, and wait for approximately 5-10 seconds and then plug it in again.
No sound or pictureCheck if the connected TV is turned on.
Check if the connections are made securely and correctly.
Check whether the connected TV or other device supports HDCP. (This unit will not output a video signal unless the other device supports HDCP.)
Check whether the output format of this unit (HDMI® FORMAT) matches the supported input format of other connected device.
Distorted pictureSometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a malfunction.
Connect this unit directly to the TV.
Completely distorted picture or black /white picture with Blu-ray Disc™/DVDMake sure the disc is compatible with this unit.
No sound or distorted soundAdjust the volume.
Check if speakers are connected correctly.
Check the HDMI® connections.
Check the settings in the Audio menu.
Picture freezes momentarily during playbackCheck the disc for fingerprints/scratches and clean with a soft cloth wiping from center to edge.
Clean the disc.
Disc cannot be played backClean the disc.
Ensure the disc label is facing up.
Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.
Cancel the ratings control or change the control level.
Insert a correct disc that can be played back on this unit.
No return to start-up screen when disc is removedReset this unit by turning it off, then on again.
The unit does not respond to the remote controlAim the remote control directly at infrared sensor window on the front panel.
Reduce the distance to infrared sensor window.

Re-insert the batteries with their polarities (+ / - signs) as indicated.
Buttons do not work or the unit stops respondingTo completely reset the unit, unplug the AC cord from the AC outlet for approximately 5-10 seconds.
The unit does not respond to some operating commands during playbackOperations may not be permitted by the disc.
The unit cannot read Blu-ray Disc™/DVD/CDDew condensation may form inside the unit. Do not use this unit for at least a few hours until its inside gets dry.
Wipe the dirt off the disc or replace the disc.
Angle does not switchThe angle cannot be switched for Blu-ray Disc™/DVD which do not contain multiple angles.
In some cases multiple angles are only recorded for specific scenes.
The password for rating level has been forgottenIf you forget your password, you need to go to the Security setup menu to reset and input a new password.
Cannot connect to the networkCheck that the LAN cable connection is properly made.
Turn on the modem or broadband router.
Check that the broadband router and/or modem is correctly connected.
Check the Network Connection Setting.
Cannot connect to the network while my PC is connected to the networkCheck the content of your Internet service contract to see if your Internet service provider prevents multiple terminals connecting at the same time.

• The VIDEO OUT SELECTOR is set to the wrong position.• Set the VIDEO OUT SELECTOR to the correct position depending on the kind of TV you connected to the DVD video player, a normal TV or a TV with component signal inputs. Then turn on the DVD video player again by pressing the POWER button.
No sound.• The equipment connected with the audio cable is not set to receive DVD signal output.• Select the correct input mode of the audio receiver so you can listen to the sound from the DVD video player.
• The audio cables are not connected securely.• Connect the audio cable into the jacks securely.
• The power of the equipment connected with the audio cable is turned off.• Turn on the equipment connected with the audio cable.
• The AUDIO SELECTOR is set to the wrong position.• Set the AUDIO SELECTOR to the correct position, then turn on the DVD video player again by pressing the POWER button.
The playback picture has occasional distortion.• The disc is dirty.• Eject the disc and clean it.
• Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear. This is not a malfunction.
The DVD video player does not start playback.• No disc is inserted.• Insert a disc. (Check that the DVD or audio CD indicator in the DVD display is lit.)
• An unplayable disc is inserted.• Insert a playable disc. (Check the disc type and color system.)
• The disc is placed upside down.• Place the disc with the playback side down.
• The disc is not placed within the guide.• Place the disc on the disc tray correctly inside the guide.
• The disc is dirty.• Clean the disc.
• A menu is on the TV screen.• Press the SET UP button to turn off the menu screen.
• The parental lock function is set.• Cancel the parental lock function or change the parental lock level.
Buttons do not work.• Power supply fluctuations or other abnormalities may interrupt correct operation.• Turn the power on or off with the POWER button. Or disconnect the power plug and insert it into the wall outlet again.
The remote control does not work properly.• The remote control is not pointed at the remote sensor of the DVD video player.• Point the remote control at the remote sensor of the DVD video player.
• The remote control is too far from the DVD video player.• Operate the remote control within about 7 m.
• The batteries in the remote control are exhausted.• Replace the batteries with new ones.
• The remote control selector is set to the wrong position.• Set the remote control selector to the corresponding position for the equipment you want to operate.

No power.• Make sure the power plug is connected to an AC outlet.
• Make sure the power is turned on.
The unit switches from DVD mode to VCR mode after 30 minutes of no activity.• When "AUTO POWER OFF" is set to "ON", the unit switches itself from DVD mode to VCR mode if disc playback stops for more than 30 minutes and you press no buttons on the remote or the unit.
This unit does not respond to the remote control.• Check if the power plug is connected to an AC outlet.
• Check the batteries in the remote control.
• Aim the remote control directly at the infrared sensor window. If necessary, remove all the obstacles between the sensor and the remote control.
• You have to be within 23 feet (7m) of this unit.
• Check if a cassette tape is in this unit.
• Tune your radio to an empty AM station so that you hear a lot of static. Turn up the volume, then if you hear some signal sound from the radio in response to your pressing buttons on the remote control, the remote control is working.
• Press and hold any button on remote control toward a digital camera. The remote control is working if you confirm infrared light through the digital camera.
Poor picture or noise.• Interference signal may be received. Change the position and direction of the unit.
VCR function does not work.• Press [VCR/DVD] on this unit or [VCR] on the remote control to light up the VCR indicator.
Cannot record a TV program.• This unit does not have a tuner to receive TV broadcasting.
• You must connect this unit to TV with audio/video output jacks or an external tuner to record TV programs.
Timer recording is impossible.• Make sure the timer program is set correctly.
• Make sure TIMER REC indicator on this unit lights up. If not, press [T-SET].
• Make sure the VCR clock is set correctly.
Cannot go into record mode.• Make sure the cassette tape has a record tab. If needed, cover the hole with adhesive tape.
• Activate this unit in VCR mode. Press [VCR] on the remote control so that the VCR indicator will illuminate.
Playback picture is partially noisy.• Adjust tracking control for a better picture by pressing [TRACKING v / /<\ on the unit or [TRACKING ▲ / ▼] on the remote control.
Cannot view a picture but the audio is OK.• Head cleaning may be necessary.
• Make sure the VCR is not in the VCR menu mode.
No or poor, playback picture.• Fine tune your TV.
Video or color fades in and out when making a copy of a cassette tape.• You cannot copy a copyrighted cassette tape.
Cannot remove the cassette tape.• Check if this unit is in the VCR mode. If not, press [VCR] on the remote control to switch the mode.
DVD function does not work.• Press [VCR/DVD] on this unit or [DVD] on the remote control to light up the DVD indicator.
No picture.• Connect the video cable firmly.
• Insert a correct video disc that can be played back on this unit.
• Press [DVD] on the remote control. Check if the DVD indicator illuminates. Then try other DVD features.
• Set "PROGRESSIVE" correctly in "DISPLAY" menu. Turn it on only if your TV has progressive scan and you are using the component video connections between the unit and the TV. Disable progressive scan for all other connections.
Disc cannot be played back.• Insert the disc.
• Clean the disc.
• Place the disc correctly with the label side up.
• Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.
• Cancel the parental lock or change the control levels.
• Handle a disc with special care so that it does not have fingerprints, scratches, or dusts on its surface.
No sound.• Adjust the volume.
• Check that the speakers are connected correctly.
• Connect the audio cables firmly.
• Turn on the power of the audio component.
• Check the VIDEO/AUDIO cable connections to the TV. (See "Connection to a TV")
• Correct the input settings on the audio component.
No DTS audio is output.• Use a DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack when outputting the DTS audio.
Distorted picture.• Connect this unit directly to the TV.
• There are some cases where pictures may be slightly distorted, and those are not a sign of a malfunction.
• Although pictures may stop for a moment, this is not a malfunction.
• Set PROGRESSIVE correctly. Turn it on only if your TV has Progressive Scan and you are using the Component Video connections between the unit and the TV. Disable Progressive Scan for all other connections.
Audio or subtitle language does not match the setting.• The selected language is not available for audio or subtitles on the DVD.
• This is not a malfunction.
The camera angle cannot be changed.• The angle cannot be switched for DVDs which do not contain multiple angles. In some cases multiple angles are only recorded for specific scenes.
• This is not a malfunction.
Audio or subtitle language cannot be changed.• The DVD does not contain audio source or subtitles in the selected language.
• This is not a malfunction.
"O" appears on the TV screen, prohibiting an operation.• That operation is prohibited by this unit or the disc.
• This is not a malfunction.
Completely distorted picture or black/white picture with DVD• Connect the unit directly to the TV.
• Make sure the disc is compatible with the unit.
• Check if the PROGRESSIVE mode is set correctly.
No audio at digital output• Check the digital connections.
• Check if the audio format of the selected audio language matches your receiver capabilities.
Picture freezes momentarily during playback.• Check the disc for finger prints/scratches and clean with a soft cloth wiping from center to edge.
No return to start-up screen when disc is removed.• Reset the unit by switching the unit off, then on again.
Buttons do not work or the unit stops responding.• To completely reset the unit, unplug the AC cord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds.
The unit does not respond to some operating commands during playback.• Operations may not be permitted by the disc.
The unit cannot read CDs /DVDs.• Use a commonly available cleaning CD / DVD to clean the lens before sending the unit for repair.
Playback does not start when the title is selected.• Check the "PARENTAL" setting.
The password for rating level has been forgotten.• Enter the default password "4737", then your forgotten password will be cleared.
