Philips DVD player troubleshooting

After the counters of electronics stores were flooded with DVD players, these excellent apparatuses also appeared on a table of repairs. How practice shows, there are similar malfunctions of DVD players in a basic mass. All malfunctions of the type of “No disk” or “Error”, random hangs-up during reproduction, etc. are specified below in our troubleshooting table with faults` codes for Philips DVD players.

No power- Check if the AC power cord is properly connected.
- Press the STANDBY ON on the front of the DVD system to turn on the power
No picture- Refer to your TVs manual for correct Video In channel selection. Change the TV channel until you see the DVD screen.
- Check if the TV is switched on.
- If the progressive scan feature is activated but the connected TV does not support progressive signals or the cables are not connected accordingly, see page 16 for proper progressive scan set up or deactivate the progressive scan feature as below:
1) Turn off your TV progressive scan mode or turn on to interlaced mode.
2) Press OPEN/CLOSE to open the disc tray.
3) Press numeric keypad '1 ’ on the remote control for few seconds.
Distorted picture- Sometimes a small amount of picture distortion may appear depending on the disc being played back This is not a malfunction.
Completely distorted picture or black/white picture with DVD- Connect DVD Player directly to the TV.
- Make sure the disc is compatible with the DVD/Player.
- Ensure that the DVD Player's TV Type is set to match that of the Disc and your TV.
No sound or distorted sound- Adjust the volume.
- Check that the speakers are connected correctly.
No audio at digital output- Check the digital connections.
- Check if your receiver can decode MPEG-2 or DTS and if not please make sure the digital output is set to PCM.
- Check if the audio format of the selected audio language matches your receiver capabilities.
No sound and picture- Check that the RGB/SCART cable is connected to the correct device (See Connecting TV).
Disc can’t be played- The DVD+R/CD-R must be finalized.
- Ensure the disc label is facing up.
- Check if the disc is defective by trying another disc.
- If you have recorded a Picture CD or MP3A/Windows Media™ Audio CD yourself, ensure that your disc contains at least 10 pictures or 5 MP3/Windows Media™ Audio tracks.
- Region code incorrect
Picture freezes momentarily during playback- Check the disc for fingerprints/scratches and clean with a soft cloth wiping from centre to edge.
No return to start-up screen when disc is removed- Reset the unit by switching the player off. then on again.
The player does not respond to the Remote Control- Aim the Remote Control directly at the sensor on the front of the player.
- Reduce the distance to the player.
- Replace the batteries in the Remote Control.
- Re-insert the batteries with their polarities (+/- signs) as indicated.
Buttons do not work- To completely reset the player, unplug the AC cord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds.
Player does not respond to some operating commands during playback.- Operations may not be permitted by the disc. Refer to the instructions of the disc jacket
DVD Player cannot read CDs/DVDs- Use a commonly available cleaning CD/DVD to clean the lens before sending the DVD Player for repair.
Menu items cannot be selected- Press STOP twice before selecting System Menu.
- Depending on the disc availability, some menu items cannot be selected.
Unable to play DivX movies- Check that the DivX file is encoded in ‘Home Theater' mode with DivX 5.x encoder.
Unable to select Progressive Scan on/off- Check that the output of the video signal is switch to YUV.
No sound during DivX movies playback- The audio codec may not be supported by the DVD player.
An MPEG-4 or DivX movies does not repeat- Check that file size of the movies does not exceed the file size of the CD disc during burning.

SD Memory Card cannot be read.The format of the card does not match that accepted by this unit or the card is not compatible.
Cannot play back JPEG files from a disc.Make sure that the disc was recorded in the UDF, IS09660 or JOLIET format.
Buttons do not work or the unit stops responding.To completely reset the unit, press and hold [(!) (standby-on)] on the front panel for 10 seconds to shut down the unit or unplug the AC cord from the AC outlet for 5-10 seconds.
Cannot find a JPEG file.Make sure that the selected group (folder) does not contain more than 9,999 files for DVD, and 999 files for CD.
Make sure that the file extension is .jpg, JPG, .jpeg or JPEG.
Error message appears when I select "Auto" in the "Player Menu".Make sure that the unit is connected to the PHILIPS brand EasyLinkTV and the "EasyLink (HDMI CEC)" is set to "On".
This error message may appear when your TV's OSD language is not supported by this unit.

• The Digital Audio Output is set to the wrong position.• Set the Digital Audio Output to the correct position, then turn on the DVD player again by pressing POWER.
The picture is poor.• The disc is dirty.• Clean the disc.
• The TV channels are not tuned in properly.• Check tuning, carry out tuning again.
The DVD player docs not start playback.# An unplayable disc is inserted.• Insert a playable disc. (Check the disc type and Regional code.)
• The disc is placed upside down.• Place the disc with the playback side down.
• The disc is not placed within the guide.• Place the disc on the disc tray corrccdy inside the guide.
• The disc is dirty.• Clean the disc.
• The Rating level is set.• Cancel the Rating function or change the rating level.
The remote control docs not work properly.• There is an obstacle in the path of the remote control and this unit.• Remove the obstacle.
• The batteries in the remote control are exhausted.• Replace the batteries with new ones.
Video tape cannot be inserted.• Is the cassette compartment empty?• Eject the tape in.
No Hi-Fi sound• Audio mode is not set properly.• Switch ‘AUDIO' in the main menu to STEREO’.
No NICAM sound recording• NICAM mode is not set properly.• Make sure NICAM in the menu is set to AUTO for the station to be recorded.
